Finding The Source Isn’t Always Easy!
I just got back from an interesting inspection. The homeowner had called us out there, stating that she periodically would wake up to find water in her basement. It wasn’t a lot of water, but it kept wetting the walls and the carpets. They had been trying to keep things dry with fans, but eventually called us for our help. When I first got onsite, I checked the area in the basement for any potential sources. My first thought was maybe a sewer back-up, because the damage wasn’t constant or on-going. A broken pipe wouldn’t leak intermittently. However, we ran a lot of water down the drain, and we couldn’t get it to back up. Stumped, we set up some drying equipment, and got the process started. A few days later, the homeowner called back to say the area was wet again! I wasn’t leaving the job-site again until I had figured out what was doing this. Walking around the basement again, I was looking for anything else that hadn’t been ruled out. While walking around, the light bulb went off in my brain. I was looking at their water softener, and that was something we hadn’t looked at previously. Turns out, the water softener had a leaky drain line, so every time it recharged, it leaked water all over. Water softeners normally recharge in the middle of the night when water isn’t being used, so everyone was sleeping while the damage occurred. Then, come morning, the leaking had stopped! Needless to say, the owner was ecstatic that we had solved her water mystery. We got the house dried and put back together again. Some sources are easy to see, others are not!
